I know someone who recently quit taking amitriptyline. As a result, she is experiencing likely symptoms of cholinergic rebound such as anxiety, insomnia, nausea, diarrhea, restlessness, and feeling hot. Please note that she had only been taking 10mg/day (for multiple years) and is therefore not likely to be experiencing any withdrawal effects related to the discontinuation of serotonin or norepinephrine reuptake.
I suggested that she take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) because of its anticholinergic and antihistamine effects, and her symptoms subsequently went away. Does anyone have any suggestions about how long she should continue to take Benadryl? Can anyone suggest a good dosage and tapering schedule?

Current dose for 1 week
3/4 of current dose for 1 week
1/2 of current dose for 1 week
1/4 of current dose for 1 week
Stop.
