this town made me nuts

Posted by Christ_empowered on October 9, 2012, at 19:19:03

I know, I know: mental illness is neurobiological. True. But, listen...I grew up in a small, southern town that helped make me nuts. Now, I'm 28, back in town (my own place, thank God), and recovering from "The Crazy."

What am I to do? No degree, I'm just now lucid enough to *do* something, and I cannot spend the rest of my life here. I don't mesh well in urban areas, the economy's terrible, and I'm living off a mix of disability and under-the-table cash from my (fortunately, somewhat comfortable) family.

This can't go on forever. I'd do anything, at this point, for a fresh start. I have enough college credits to start something w/ an online, non-profit school. I've never been liked here, and now that I've managed to do the impossible (get physically and mentally healthier, score the equivalent of temporary insanity for a violent misdemeanor), people will put up with me, but they sure as hell don't like me.

UGH!!!!!

My family is limited. There's some in a small town in Ohio. That'd be cool and all, but...I'm their (sister, aunt, niece's) crazy son, you know?

I just don't know what to do at this point. I feel like my life was taken from me by a small southern town, and I'm just now getting back what was taken from me (and a little extra, thank God).

What to do?

I'd stay where you are till the economey improves, then move to a more prosperous area in search of employment (Thats what i did)

The online/distance university thing sounds a great idea.

Maybe start doing some volunteer work, both to give your self an outside interest, and to start showing your neighbours that you arnt crazy, you're a normal guy who had an illness and is now well.

And keep taking your meds!

I so totally sympathize with you. I grew up in a small town in Ohio (which town in Ohio do your relatives live in? I grew up in Athens), and I'd go completely crazy if I had to go live there again. Could you go live with your family in Ohio? I know, you're their "crazy" relative, but 1. they love you and 2. you are better now, and they would see that. It might be better than being in a town you hate, where you feel like no one likes you....which is probably far from the truth, btw - you gotta remember always that people around you are always FAR more concerned with themselves than with most of those around them.
And no matter what you do, look into finishing your degree, be it online or in person.

I know, not much advice, but I sympathize. And I'm really curious in which small town in Ohio you have relatives.
I wish you the best of luck. Hang in there.
Kat

I empathize I do not like this state. We are close and I do know what you mean. But are any better? Or is it a temporary solution to a problem. I'd fight through the prejudice obtain that online degree and when you are done hopefully the economy will have improved. And I echo the others take the darn meds. Phillipa

I really don't like small towns either. I currently live in one and have for fifteen years. (About 3,00 people) I don't personally like knowing everyone. I like my anonymity? I kind of feel sorry for people who grow up in a small town. Everyone knows your business and it's way more clickish than anyone really knows.

I say move urban if/when you can and move on!
