prozac-wellbutrin

Posted by pal ed ism on September 28, 2012, at 14:05:38

Earlier this year I got manic after dexedrine augmentation was added to my Nardil. After a time of not being on meds, I am now 4 weeks on Wellbutrin 300 and my psychiatrist just this week added in 20 mgs Prozac. Has anyone been on this combination and how did you find its efficacy?

Prozac didn't work for me. It seemed to overshadow the Wellbutrin.

I have been on another SSRI (Paxil 20mg) and Welbutrin 300mg and found it great.

Extremely good releif and very few side effects

Never been on that combination. The SRI+wellbutrin combination is pretty standard. There have been a number of studies showing that adding in wellbutrin helps reduce side effects from SRI drugs. I don't know if there's any data showing an improved response in terms of symptoms, functioning, or quality of life, though.

I'm kind of curious as to why Prozac was chosen as the SRI. Prozac is a more energizing/akathisia-inducing SRI, and it has a long half-life. 20mgs is the old standard starting dose. Some people start at 10. Are you looking for a "lift" ?

I'm no pro, so I won't criticize or offer any advice. Just please keep an eye on your mood, and if you start feeling agitated, call somebody. Drug-induced akathisia, agitation, psychosis, mania, etc. can result in a hospital stay and all kinds of medical bills, not to mention a more severe diagnosis and exposure to all kinds of meds. I would imagine that, should you catch it early, you might be able to do something (taper the meds, take a tranquilizer, etc.) on an outpatient basis.

Has your doctor provided any benzodiazepines or perhaps a low-to-moderate dose atypical antipsychotic?

Thanks Christ_empowered and everyone else for your kind responses. For 21 years I have pretty much taken nothing but Nardil, and I could never really work off of Nardial. In fact I have had trials of Prozac and Wellbutrin in the past separately, but they did not really do anything. But in the last few years Nardil really played tricks with my judgement, and then especially Dec 2011-Jan 2012 where I became just flat out manic on just a 2.5 mg dose of Dexedrine augmentation. Mania is funny. It feels great but you don't realize the destruction you are doing. Of course my psychiatrist is super reluctant to even talk of returning to an MAOI or dexedrine-with-anything. I really am having to face the prospect that I really am "treatment-resistant" and that I may not be able to work in my profession again. (I am 50). I know that now is not a good time to make sweeping judgements about my future.
