Low-dose naltrexone for depression

Posted by Tomatheus on August 30, 2012, at 16:35:28

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience taking low-dose naltrexone for depression, either alone or in combination with another medication or supplement? What are your thoughts on naltrexone's potential to boost energy and concentration and to relieve hypersomnia?

Hi there,

I had the experience of using Naltrexone in the past as the augumenting medication. I was taking it with Moclobemide, and it also prevented poop out for some time.
I doubt that it can work as monotherapy.
It's just my experience.

I've been taking it off and on for a few years. I feel somewhat calmer when I'm on it, somewhat less depressed. It makes it harder for me to fall asleep when I take it at bedtime, and my dreams are more vivid, so maybe it would help your hypersomnia. Though some people on LDN report that it makes them sleep longer and more deeply. And others say that LDN only affected their sleep for a week or two after each increase in dosage.

yea...its mainly for addiction purposes...still maybe it could be used but one thing it is used for is depersonization disorder...actually n_shrimpe needs to hear this because i see his/her posts about being in torment with dissocation.

Anyways, yea..look into it but its not known to be used for depression, it reverses the effects of opiods.

good blessings to you!

Naltrexone, at 50 mg, is used to treat addictions. Low dose naltrexone, which has a maximum dose of 4.5 mg, is used to treat some forms of cancer and some autoimmune disorders, and some people use it for depression and anxiety. The low dose of naltrexone briefly blocks brain endorphins, which causes the pituitary gland to produce more endorphins, so LDN actually increases the amount of opioids in the body.

Thanks Slabicki, Hugh, Phillipa, and RJLockhart for your responses.

Slabicki, I know that you said in another post that you don't remember what dose of naltrexone that you took when you combined it with moclobemide, but how did you respond to moclobemide alone before you added the naltrexone (assuming that you tried moclobemide alone)?

And Hugh, how what dose of naltrexone do you take when you take it, and what side effects (if any) do you experience?

Phillipa, I'll take a look in the archives for some of Bleauberry's posts about this drug.

Thanks again to all of you for responding.

Hi Tomatheus,

My response to Moclobemide was great. It's a great medication.
Unfortunately, after few days I started to loose the response as always. This is when I added Naltrexone low dose, and I was able to maintain the response for some time.
But I'm treatment resistant, so that's what usually happens.

Slabicki,

Thank you for your reply. Your response to moclobemide as monotherapy doesn't sound like it was too much different from my response to the medication -- I had a decent response to it that lasted a few days, much as I do to some other medications. Maybe trying either moclobemide or another reversible inhibitor of MAO-A (I'm thinking possibly Rhodiola) with low-dose naltrexone will give me a response that will last for at least a little while, as it did for you. It's at least something to be hopeful about.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

When I first started taking LDN a few years ago, I only took it at bedtime (that's what most people recommend). I took 3 mg. The main side effects were difficulty falling asleep and vivid dreams. When I tried taking higher doses, I had even more difficulty falling asleep. Later, I read that some people take it in the morning and it works just as well and doesn't have the sleep-associated side effects of taking it at bedtime. So I started taking it in the morning, and I was able to tolerate the maximum dose of 4.5 mg and it didn't interfere with my sleep.
