Anyone else new to MAOIs? Scared

Posted by Roslynn on August 21, 2012, at 15:25:57

I am starting Nardil next week and very scared of the food interactions. CAn anyone relate?

I think I've got the med interactions down and I have ordered a medical ID.

Please someone answer?

Thank you,
Roslynn

Roslynn,

I was a bit apprehensive about the dietary restrictions pertaining to MAOIs when I took them, but I never had a hypertensive crisis. I mostly stuck to the diet, but there was one time when I ate some monterey jack cheese without thinking that it was an aged cheese (and apparently it is), and I didn't have any reaction to it whatsoever. So, while I would still recommend adhering to a diet that's essentially tyramine free, I would say that it seems that the risk of experiencing a hypertensive crisis from eating some food with tyramine in it isn't as absolute as it's sometimes made out to be. I've also read that the sensitivity to tyramine (the trace amine in most of the foods to be avoided if you're taking an MAOI) can vary considerably from one individual to the next, which may explain why some individuals may be more likely to experience hypertensive crises than others. Unfortunately, I don't think that there's any way to predict how sensitive to tyramine you're going to be, so given the fact that hypertensive reactions can and do occur from eating the wrong foods, I think it would be best to play it safe, especially during your first few months on an MAOI.

Well, I can't think of anything else to add as it pertains to the MAOI diet, but I wanted to chime in and let you know that I didn't find the diet to be too problematic, and I'd also like to wish you luck with Nardil. So, good luck!

I was completely vigilant about cheeses, etc when I first started Parnate. But I have since read that you have to eat a lot of cheese (3 oz or more) to set off a reaction. I learned that you can have up to 1/4 cup of soy sauce, so I started eating sushi again. I now eat small amounts of parmesan on spaghetti, small amounts of feta on salads. I stay away from aged meats, but then I never liked salami or pepperoni anyway. The food restrictions are really pretty minimal. Even if you want to be vigilant, mozzeralla and american cheese aren't aged and are fine, so you could have a slice of pizza. Going without other cheeses and aged meats (which are all high in salt and fat anyway) is not really a hardship.

Just follow the instructions and there will be no problem .
I took that med for about 6 years and I learned to eat many things while on it . Many times I eat food from the forbidden list but that was after years of knowning this med

I had one HP crisis at the beggining because I ate an spoiled piece of chicken that was on my fridge for many days . That was my mistake
I also didnt know there was a pill to control my blood pressure

I have been on MAOIs since 1982. The old list of foods to avoid was based more on anecdotal reports than any kind of scientific investigation. More recent lists are not as restrictive. Personally, the only thing I miss is Mexican food. I am concerned that the sharp chedder cheese used will produce a reaction. I eat pizza, as long as parmesan cheese is not used. Mozzarella is okay to eat. Overall, MAOIs have not required a radical change in my diet. I don't feel deprived, for the most part.

What foods are you most concerned about?

That's smart. It is a good thing that you are taking MAOIs seriously.

Dear Scott,

Thank you so much for your reply and for the links you sent.

I think I am most concerned about food additives. I am seeing soybean oil, yeast extract, and just yeast, near the bottom on the ingredient list on many of the prepared foods I eat. Are these safe? I know to avoid soy itself, such as soy sauce and soy milk. But soybean oil?
Is yeast extract to be avoided? Yeast itself OK if it is not Brewer's yeast?

Thank you for any help!

Dose is very important here...... if its near the bottom of the list, its present in very small amounts, so likely wouldnt do much harm provided you dont eat the full box
