epinephrine and parnate

Posted by emmanuel98 on July 16, 2012, at 23:27:41

Hope someone can help me. I take 40mg parnate/day and it's working very well. I was told that I should not mix with epinephrine and should not, therefore, take novocaine at the dentists. The problem is that epinephrine is a vaso-constrictor (constricts the small veins to prevent bleeding). I am now trying to get a crown for a tooth and the process causes bleeding, too much to get an impression for the crown. My dentist said that epinephrine would prevent this. So my question is -- how much of a problem is mixing epinephrine and parnate? Is it really a bad combination or not? I am seeing my p-doc before the dentist on Thursday, but frankly I don't think my p-doc knows a lot about this.

Any advice is welcome.

Prilocaine and Carbocaine, or even nitrous oxide ("laughing gas"). Plain old Lidocaine is also a decent choice.

Ill have to really reserach to find an awnser but this is what I found on my fast research procedures.

If the dentist hits the right spot, it doesn't matter too much that the anesthetic preparation does not contain epinephrine. It just doesn't last as long. I asked my pdoc and dentist if the epinephrine would react badly with Parnate. Neither one of them produced a definitive answer, so I opted to not use the epinephrine. I have had 4 fillings and 2 root canals performed on me over the last month without epinephrine using Carbocaine (mepivacaine). "Carbocaine Plain" without epinephrine works fine for me.

I've had a crown while using an maoi, and while I can't use epinephrine, my dentist had no problem with it.

How much bleeding does your dentist expect? I'm not sure why a crown would cause such a degree of bleeding. I don't think my dentist felt he needed anything other than anesthetic (he used a non-epinephine version of the anesthetic).

Did your dentist say it was essential?

I also just got a crown and didn't have bleeding. I think I might get a second opinion from another dentist. I also don't use the epinephrine in numbing agent as it causes palpitations. Phillipa

He's perfectly happy to use an anesthetic other than novocaine. It's just the epinephrine would reduce bleeding. The bleeding is due to the fact that he has to poke at my gums to recede them enough to get a full impression. My gums tend to bleed, unfortunately. Although I did have another crown put in a few months ago without epinephrine and didn't bleed too much.
