bipolar late life onset lamictal

Posted by n_shrimpie on June 11, 2012, at 7:50:49

I've had unipolar depression my entire life, and eventually started lamictal. twice when i've lowered my lamictal my derealization (which is associated with my depression) finally cleared, so I suspect I may have triggered a manic episode when i lowered the lamictal (even though I just felt normal and happy, not manic) which leads me to believe that I might be bipolar, even though I've been unipolar my entire life. Is there such a thing as late onset bipolar, and if so, will i have it forever?

A bit confused as if lowered lamictal felt normal and happy how does that constitute bipolar? Maybe you didn't need the lamictal? Phillipa

Mania isn't subtle. My manic episodes involve intense psychosis and agitation. If Lamictal makes you a little agitated or something, that's either drug induced activation or, if it happens when you lower the dose, its possible that the problem is that you might do better with a higher dose and/or an additional med to augment it.

That's my opinion. Clearly, I'm not a doctor.

might be some weirdness with lamictal itself. derealization is an anxiety spectrum illness, not really depressive. Maybe lamictal is too activating?
wonder if lowering it and adding a little of something else might be better?
I know its possible to get hypomania as a discontinuation symptom when coming off SSRIs (would explain why some folks feel better off meds then crash a few weeks later). Perhaps lamictal also?
