What do you take for ADD?

Posted by Laney on May 23, 2012, at 9:30:33

I think I may have ADD. My attention is really bad, especially when it comes to my math classes. I hate it and I'm going to bring it up to my doctor. I have a lot of math I'm going to be having to take for the next 2 years so what are you all taking for this?

Thanks!

Laney

I used to take Adderall. Works better for me than any form of Ritalin (there are lots on the market), and its cheap now that its generic.

Stimulants can also help depression, so I'd go for a stimulant over, say, Straterra.

Something to slow the mind down like the klonopin. Are you sure you really want this much stress in your life? As was advised by a doc before I did that I shouldn't not good for me turns out he was right. Phillipa

I've been taking Strattera since 2004. Here is a link which links to links where I have posted about it many, many times.

Have you taken the various self-tests for ADD online? They are a good step to help sort things out.

try Vyvanse. I've tried every stimulant out there, and it just made me feel up or down, and I felt always at the whim of my dose. Vyvanse is consistent-- there's controlled trials of it showing it outperforms other meds in the long-run with its effectiveness.

You don't want to feel like you're on a roller coaster. If your insurance doesn't cover it, contact Shire's Patient Assistance Program, Shire Cares. If you meet certain income requirements, and your insurance denied coverage, Shire will pay for your Vyvanse. Call them to apply.

Call your insurance first-- it often requires a prior authorization from your doctor. I'm on 70mg. It's very subtle.

I probably wouldn't be able to get assistance for Vyvanase due to not fitting into the income guidelines.

So, how much can it cost if your self paying with a prescription drug card?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what a drug card would cost, but vyvanse is only $130 a month for 30 70 mg capsules, which is the highest you'd get prescribed.

Shire has a coupon for the first 30 day supply from their website.

Laney, Vyvanse is a good idea, but I just wanted to suggest (since I'm not familiar with you here) that you check the archives, here, in case you haven't. There are innumerable threads on attention and focus in which different meds are discussed.

Two that I've been suggesting a lot lately for this purpose are desipramine and protriptyline. They're old, and probably cheap.

Another substance that helps with my attention is flowering quince. You can read about that in a post of mine on the alternatives board, if you wish.

This is the end of the thread.
