On regular buspar, with enough sleep, a good diet, and exercise, I feel great.
My anxiety is controlled without my mind being 'suppressed' the way it was on a benzo. Less rambling, less trouble getting to the point when I talk. Less episodic forgetfulness.
Over time, I was able to ramp from 7.5 mgs once daily, to 15 mgs twice daily. I use the higher dose at more anxiety-provoking times.
Mixing buspar with a benzo, or with alcohol, does not work for me. I will just be tired and unproductive the next day. And try jamming too many psychostimulants, like Sudafed and coffee together, and my neverending loop of worrying thoughts will return.

I worked with a nurse prescriber to slowly increase the buspar while I was taking .50 to 1.0 of clonazepam daily.
That was actually a rough patch, because the clonazepam plus buspar were a little too tiring and demotivating. After a week or so, I was able to taper off of the clonazepam.
Even though I had the buspar onboard, I still had some additional withdrawal anxiety. It was at its worst on the fourth day off clonazepam. But after that, all went fairly well!
So -- my advice -- proceed slowly -- things might not feel perfect at first but you can get there.

I remember when they used to say if had been on a benzo that buspar wouldn't work. Glad it worked well for you. Phillipa

Yes, I was skeptical, but this nurse prescriber has a long career treating psych issues. The right medical professional makes all the difference!

Thanks for the link. Do you suffer from anxiety or panic attacks (or both) yourself? My guess is partially that this works for me because I do not have panic attacks.

youre right,p,I have panic attacks, although rarely now with klonopin.I also heard that buspar doesnt work as well if you first used a benzo.I guess thats why my pdoc always wants me to keep with the benzo. She says if panic is involved and the ssris doent control it,then the benzo is the option.Sure wish I just had anxiety, not panic. But its good to hear that buspar is working for someone.
