One cannot ignore the ramifications of the aggressive and excessive marketing of psychotropic drugs, and the ludicrous use of the DSM to pathologize children who are simply being children.
People, what is wrong with this picture?????

I've always thought it was and is wrong. Kids are kids and stress of today needs to be lowered. Too much responsibility and planned activities for kids today. What ever happened to playing with friends? Phillipa

Thanks for posting this. My favorite quote from the article...
And court documents unsealed in South Carolina in 2009 show that Eli Lilly sales reps even used golf bets to push their atypical antipsychotic Zyprexa; one doctor agreed to start new patients on Zyprexa for each time a sales representative parred.

Ridiculous. To be fair, psychiatry has always been about the "medicalization of deviance." I know. I was called narcissistic for being a stressed out, drugged up gay dude.
I don't think you can look at psychiatry without looking at society as a whole. As we've moved away from morality and shared values to a sort of pseudo-scientific, seemingly rational way of looking at things, mental illness has become more important because it provides a (seemingly) reasonable explanation for behavior. They're not bad--they're mad. That sort of thing.

These companies are responsible for keeping me sane. I owe my life to them. They can push these things at candy stores if it helps them to subsidize the costs of R&D for psychosis for all I care.

Yes. It is important not to confuse the tools with the vendor who sells them or the mechanic who uses them.
