Am I dependent on meds?

Posted by newo38 on May 14, 2012, at 22:58:43

I was going to come of viibryd and had a hard time at work. I don't want to mess my life up. I finally feel like i have a chance at stability. What bothers, or scares me is, am I dependent on these drugs to function? Is my brain now unable to be "happy" because it has relied on ads for 14 years? I know I am inviting horror stories here from ant -med peeps but I want to ask.

I can't say that you're dependent... but there seems to be a psychological crutch associated with long term AD use. In my personal experience, coming off any AD without having dealt with, or being in the process of dealing with the inner issues you have, will most likely have you back on medication soon enough. IF you've already dealt with everything, or it's purely a biological thing with any reasonable causation one can theorise... perhaps medication is the way to feel OK.

I come from experience, I've been on a whole range of AD's since my pre-teens, high doses and only in the last year have I been able to be off them with great success. I personally think there's no issue with being on medication long term, though I do believe one should seek newer medications over time, if possible and reasonable. There are worse things than being on medication long term/forever... living a sub-standard life not being on them!

Other than that, the normal boring stuff like exercise, good nutrition, quality sleep, plenty of sex.... you get the idea. (Find a Great Doctor... one that actually listens to you, what you say, and accepts you may have better insight into yourself than he ever could)

Read the thread I posted earlier for an insight, perhaps something in there will resonate with you.

As my old ex pdoc retired now once said "if it ain't broken don't try to fix it". I think you are fortunate to be working and have a med that works. Would you ask the same question if it was diabetes or a similar condition? Phillipa
