hi, I only take klonopin .5mg at night.Ive been diagnosed with gad, depression, and panic.so far,it has worked for all three.I was on remeron, and zoloft, but tapered them successfully,feb.2011,due to weigh gain.Ive been trying to taper the klonopin because I have worries of dependence and tolerance with long term use.Its very difficult for me to taper this drug. However,it is working, very well, and no side effects.

my doctor had me try just being on xanax as both an antidepressant and anti-anxiety and was not worried about addiction with me. (also knowing my personality)
to me, the word addiction can mean different things.
- we are all in a sense addicted to our meds, they need a withdrawal period and we sometimes need to increase the dose. i have been on the same amount of 2mg xanax xr for over 3 years.
- if something is "addicting", but helping someone live, the benefits outweigh the risks.
-a friend with an addictive personality said she cannot take immediate acting substances because she can't stop. so in that sense, it would have been abuse. i think the abuse part should be more of the concern.I think if just taking klonopin works, that's awesome. And that's less meds. Dr's always have different oppinions.

There's one more thing about Klonopin addiction that I didn't learn about until I was in the middle of kicking it altogether (and doing research while withdrawing): you can suffer withdrawal symptoms BETWEEN doses, which is a cycle no doctor ever told me about. Doesn't sound like much of a problem perhaps, but it shows when you're inadvertantly deprived of your next dose, like when the airline gate-checked my carry-on, which had my meds in it. Benzos can be a full-time emotional roller coaster ride, with the cure being worse than the disease. Just something to consider.

One more thing: the rebound anxiety associated with benzo withdrawal, even between doses, is absolutely horrible - way worse than the anxiety the drug was originally prescribed for. Before I realized it was a withdrawal symptom, I simply assumed that it was just an alarming reminder of what I was taking it for in the first place. Of course, I was wrong.

That sucks! I guess we are all different. I start to notice the next day if I've forgotten my Xanax XR first by feeling "weird" (probably de-presonalization), then maybe later in the day it's some agitation, and then anxiety. For me it hasn't made my anxiety worse without it, but that's just my experience.

As I recall, you were on high dose atypical antipsychotics before. If I had to choose low-to-moderate dose Benzo or full dose atypical, I'd take the benzo.
Klonopin helps anxiety, agitation; in some people, it helps calm mania and psychosis, usually combined with other drugs. I would worry a bit about drug-induced depression/worsening of depression. Long-term use can be tricky. 6 months in to round #1 of my benzo use, I started waking up with panic attakcs. I didn't know it then, but it was probably a mix of being on 2mgs/day klonopin for too long and also the sedative (sonata or ambien) wearing off in the AM.
I'd personally think xanax xr would be easier and more effective for your symptoms, but I'm clearly not an expert.

Klonopin is well known for causing depression, as it has seratonin blocking properties.
What's wrong with an antidepressant?
