what is the status of Riluzole

Posted by ihatedrugs on April 22, 2012, at 14:25:35

Is anyone taking Riluzole? Is it still being studied for depression? My psych dr. has never even mentioned it despite my lack of response to more meds than I can count.

One thing however, I began Lamictal (200mg) about 6 months ago and have to say it has help quite a bit. Not back to my old jolly self but not hiding in the closet crying either. One thing I've noticed is I don't like to go out anymore. I used to love going to dinner, the movies or anywhere else. Even though I can say I have days where I don't feel depressed, I can't bring myself to go out. However, if I do, I tend to have a decent time. This makes me feel as if I'm letting life pass me by and bothers me. I don't want to be a recluse the rest of my life but don't want to have to force myself to go out or travel either.
Also, my dr. told me about Ketamine clinical trials where I live. I'm not sure about it. I hate for this to be the next great hope, only to let us all down. Anyways, I know of one poster who's trying it. Is anyone else considering it?

Greetings

Meds
Lamictal 200
Vyvanse 40
Wellbutrin 150 mg
Cerefolin
Klonopin up to 2mg (during a crisis...who knows how many mg?)
Lexapro 10mg
Ambien 20mg (when desperate)

All kinds of supplements.

It does sound like you are doing a bit better is this true. If so baby steps keep doing what you fear and maybe it will help. So lamictal at 200mg is helping you? Phillipa

Lamictal is helping. Actually more than anything else I've taken before. I won't say it's perfect but at least I can function. Hopefully, it will continue doing so. You're right about taking baby steps and I'm working on that. I'm also entering menopause (48)and believe this may be exacerbating things a bit. I hope you are doing well. Greetings

It's probably not prescribed off-label more often because it's so expensive. The FDA granted tentative approval to Sun Pharma to manufacture a generic version. That was in 2010, and it still isn't available, as far as I can tell.

In all honesty be prepared for new symptoms to appear during menopause that is when I started an ad. But then some fly through no problems at all. Phillipa

I think it's a really good drug, just too expensive.

If the price point were better, we would get to see if it was useful generally. I hope they do that.

Riluzole can be used in a couple ways-as antidepressant, as an anxiolytic and as a treatment for OCD.

I toook it to treat my OCD and think I needed a higher dose.
