Awesome new doc!

Posted by Christ_empowered on April 23, 2012, at 20:27:28

My most recent psychiatrist must have gotten a new job or something...I dunno. Anyway, when the community mental health place called, they told me I'd be seeing a new doctor because my old doc was leaving them, probably forever.

I was nervous. She was about 45 minutes late. The session was awesome! She's going to do AIMS testing, try to reduce my Abilify to the 10-20 range (slooooowly), and leave everything else the same for the time being. She was happy that I wasn't taking the Vistaril every night and that I had so far avoided it daytime use.

She's northern (I'm in the southeast), but she's been down here a while. Very professional but friendly, obviously conservative with the meds (good for me, not for all people), and interested in getting to know her patients (I guess she really believes in the whole "bio-psycho-social model" thing).

Awesome!

CE that is truly awesome and originally being from NE I did find the docs there superior. That's my opinion. Phillipa

That's great! Yeah, the whole conservative-with-meds thing is kind of a double-edged sword .. mine's the same: on the one hand, it means he isn't really willing to experiment with stuff he isn't familiar with, but at the same time, he isn't going to leave you stranded on super-high SSRI doses, and is also careful about avoiding specific benzos which induce tolerance more rapidly etc.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I was so afraid that, in light of my recent near-commitment, this doc would be like "wow. Its Thorazine for you, my friend," but she wasn't.

She seems to understand the need to control mental illness without controlling the patient, which I think is very important. Some docs seem to have power issues, which freaks me out since they're in a position of authority already.

I'm happy about all this. I think we'll get along well. I'm particularly excited about having someone who is willing to lower the Abilify but also understands that it must be done sloooowly. Before, docs would just say "well, go to 15," and then I'd freak out, and then it was "go back to 30." This doctor said she'd lay out a game plan and watch me for signs of crazy.

Excellent to hear... I'm glad you're happy with her approach to meds. Did your previous doc place you on too many meds?

Do you intend to stop the abilify completely?
