Making progress some questions for nardil experts

Posted by lifelover on April 1, 2012, at 18:01:29

Sup guys been a while since I posted but Im happy to say im making progress towards overcoming this whole ordeal. The ocd that Ive been struggling with has diminished signifigantly thanks to pure willpower and better thinking. There are still some things that I need to work on but all in all im happy with the progress and see it continuing to improve as time goes by. The thing with ocd that Ive realized for myself is you have to make a consiese effort for a while to recognize when an obessive though comes to mind but do not get attached to it or dwell on it. Then eventually the thought passes. As time goes by it has almost become second nature where these thoughts are not even coming to mind.

As for the other part of my struggle social anxiety, I believe it can be partly helped through self effort, but there is also a chemical componant to it that must be adressed with medication, nardil in my case. When I was on nardil before I had really good relief sometimes 100% remission depending on the dose. Life was great for those 7 months. Now after almost 2 years of suffering my psychiatrist finally feels comfortable with me going back on it. However when she popped the question last week I told her to wait until I lose more weight. See Im afraid of becoming fat on nardil. Has anyone lost weight while on nardil? And does the nardil make it harder to lose weight or is it just as easy as long as u got the right diet and exercise routine? I think next time I go to my pdoc Im gona ask her to start me on it in 2 weeks. I just feel like nows the time, Ive been struggling for long time now , and need relief. I figure as long as I dont eat the wrong things and have a solid exercise routine I wont have to worry about weight. One of the question I have for the nardil experts(Jedi in particular) is how do you feel about taking unisom with nardil for sleep? I read online on another forum from a guy who was having great success with nardil that it works great in combination with melatonin but wanted to run it by you guys to see what you think. If youve read up to this point I salute you and wish you much happiness, please reply to my post thankyou.

Lifelover,

I began taking doxylamine succinate (generic Unisom) early on during my Nardil trial. I can't say whether or not the doxylamine actually helped me fall asleep any more quickly than I would have fallen asleep without the antihistamine, but surprisingly, attempting to discontinue the doxylamine resulted in a complete relapse of the vegetative depression that I was suffering from at the time. After I tried stopping the doxylamine and relapsed, I made sure to keep taking the antihistamine for as long as I continued to take Nardil. As I said, I don't know if the doxylamine was even helping with my sleep, but I didn't want to risk another depressive relapse like the one I had when I tried stopping the doxylamine.

So, I can't vouch for the efficacy of doxylamine/Unisom as a treatment for insomnia associated with Nardil use, but I can say that I took 25 mg of the antihistamine nightly for most of the time that I spent taking Nardil and never noticed any sort of adverse reactions. I know that antihistamines are sometimes listed as being contraindicated with MAOIs and sometimes listed as being not contraindicated. I can't say for sure which lists are right, but I can say that I took doxylamine with Nardil without any problems.

No matter what sleep medication or supplement you end up taking with Nardil, I wish you luck with your upcoming trial. I hope you experience the relief from your social anxiety that you're looking for and that you find an add-on to help combat the insomnia that tends to come with taking Nardil.

I've taken 25-50mg of Unisom in conjunction with Parnate. My only recommendation would be that you take it roughly 1-2 hours before you intend to sleep, as it can produce a rather nasty hangover, particularly at the higher dose. Its efficacy as a sleep-aid tends to be hit-and-miss for me; some nights, I have to co-administer a benzo.

I always gained weight on Nardil, but it is always welcome weight gain.

I don't like Unisom or any antihistamines for that matter because they leave me groggy and lethargic the next day.
A good brand of melatonin at 1-3mg is quite helpful for me for insomnia. Ambien can also be very good (and since it has such a short half-life does not leave me groggy the next day), but it is very psychologically if not physically habit-forming.
