Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin or Valium-most addictive

Posted by paulb on March 24, 2012, at 13:44:23

Hi there

I would like to ask people at this forum which is arguably the most addictive benzodiazepine out of four commonly used. From my research on asking peoples opinions lorazepam is because of its short half-life and slow withdrawal from the benzodiazepine site. I have heard that lorazepam is now supposed to be only used in psychiatric wards for PRN use and is causes more problems upon withdrawal than heroin. However professor Ashton who is somewhat of an expert says that Clonazepam causes the most problems upon withdrawal. I have also heard that Xanax could be because of its very short half-life and high potency. However some claim diazepam is. Out of these four medications can I ask for some feedback based on evidence of what is the most addictive. thankyou

I've always heard that xanax was the most problematic benzo.

I always heard it was Xanax. I've been taking Xanax to sleep for a couple of years, and I never habituated or needed more, and if I run out (and have to take Seroquel to sleep instead) I don't notice significant symptoms. Maybe there are some that I'm not noticing, but I think the addictive mess of Xanax is overhyped.
