Lithium Trileptal interaction?

Posted by sheilac on March 22, 2012, at 13:51:31

I don't know if it's anxiety, akathesia or what is going on.

I take 600mg of Trileptal a day and it's doing a great job. Sometimes makes me feel flat though. So the doc suggested a small dose of Lithium for depression.

I've tried 300mg and 150mg and they both give me a feeling of hyperness and anxiety like feelings. The small dose of lithium dose lift my depression, but I am wondering if there is some sort of interaction between Lithium and Trileptal?

Why do I feel this way?

I think the Lithium helps me, but am I getting too much of some chemical in my brain? Is it just akathesia or anxiety brought on by the lithium add on?

I can't answer your questions. Perhaps you can give lithium 150 mg a few more days before abandoning it.

Akathisia is rare, but not unheard of with lithium. However, akathisia is a rather intense syndrome that is usually unmistakable to the person experiencing it. If you are having a reaction, it is very mild at this point.

I am not aware of any reasons why Trileptal and lithium would interact adversely.

I hope others here respond to your inquiry. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Thanks Scott. It feels like the lithium gives me energy and anxiety. I tried moving my dose to the afternoon (so I won't be up all night going to the bathroom) and I think I need to have just a small amount of coffee in the morning.

Hi there. I was on tripletal (paired with cymbalta) for four years. All was successful. In 2006 I stopped both, to have a baby, then resumed both in 2007. After about a year I added lithium to the mix. Within a year something went wrong-I began to get very angry, have outbursts in front of the kids, etc. I stopped the Trileptal and went to Seroquel, and things improved.

It did not occur to me at the time that the problem could have been lithium, but it has since. I am about to go off lithium due to another issue, and am hoping dearly I can tolerate the Tripletal again. I suspect it is a much safer than Seroquel to be on longer term.

I have found on the internet some reference to problems between Tegretol, which is very similar to Trileptal, and Lithium. Nothing was in a language I understood much... something about
neurotoxities. Sounded important. I would surely like to know how that is relevant to our situations.

Good luck.
