Does anyone use adjunctive L-Tryptophan (not 5htp) for depression, on top of their medications? My doctor says its ok to use on top of SSRIs, and its especially good for sleep as well. I got my neurotransmitter testing back and it showed i was extremely low in urinary serotonin, which may not correlate to brain serotonin, but I want to increase serotonin anyway.
What dosages have you guys used for l-tryptophan? I hear you can take it up to 10g/day. I want to do it during the day but mostly at night.
Please share your experiences

No experience but thought you could not test neurotransmitters in blood or urine? Is this something new? Phillipa

phillipa you're actually right, my pdoc said those tests don't reallyt ell you anything about central neurotransmitters! so maybe waste of money. i don't get why my integrative doctor ran them then...seems odd. still though i am going to start trying 4-6g of l-tryptophan daily and see how i feel. i do think we should ALL be on targeted amino acid therapy. I am reading a study about D-Phenylalanine, supposedly increases PEA.

This is good news that tryptophan can be an adjunct safely to ssri's. I wonder why it is safe and 5htp is not safe? I see Tryptan is a pharmaceutical drug over in Europe that is used as an adjunct but it still has a warning about using it with ssri's and maoi's which is contradicting as it is supposed to be used as an adjunct. If you try the tryptophan would you mind letting us know how it goes as I am all over it if it does. I have lowered my sertraline due to sexual dysfunction and would like to find a natural supplement as an adjunct. Sam-e gave me terrible anxiety as did methylfolate.

Money. I once had a pdoc when tryptophan was banned remember the bad batch? I'd taken some and went to bed and didn't feel like breathing. Now is this wierd or what? Phillipa
