Currently med free and trying to find a solution to a migraine variant (dizziness and vertigo) I wondered how can one tell the difference between Anhedonia and depression ? At present, I feel so totally disconnected from the world, I see no pleasure, joy or happiness. I feel nothing. I have been on a med merry go round for years for "atypical/dysththemia with varied success and failures like all of us.
Its hard to tell if the meds have left me in this state or I need meds to get me out of it.

What have you tried to treat your condition and what were the results?
If you live in Europe, you can try amisulpride.
If you live in the US, you might try a combination of Abilify and Lamictal - perhaps with Wellbutrin.
Have you tried stimulants?

Thanks philippa i shall look
SLS - Sleep is hit and miss - I can always get off to sleep easily but wake up hating everything or wake up very early (3 -4 am) and cant get back to sleep.
Appetite is fine, I eat and snack all day, no dry mouth or constipation.
I've tried most of the SSRIs, SNRIs and some TCAs and also moclobomide - Some of them did there job at getting me out of a dark depressed state, but none have really treated the chronic underlying low grade mood I suffer from and the S/Es were worse than the condition.
I did have amisulpride on my list but it would mean buying it online - does it not play havoc with ones prostate ?

Is depression more than a symptom cluster then?
Can symptom clusters have symptoms?

> Can symptom clusters have symptoms?Yikes, that's too much for my depressed little brain to think about. I'm sure people can be depressed about anhedonia, though, and depressed about having depression. How far down this rabbit hole can we go?
On another note: I know that anhedonia can also be a side a effect of medication, but that the original poster is not currently taking medication. I think I may also have read that medication-induced anhedonia can persist months or more longer after discontinuing the medication similar to sexual side effects. I may be wrong about this, however.
I am sometimes concerned about medication causing my anhedonia but then my depression improves BECAUSE of taking my medication and I have brief windows where I experience pleasure. It's a good thing I don't listen to my depressive thoughts or certain people who have unbalanced views about medication!
This is the end of the thread.
