In the olden days probably beginning of 1900's did they use to wrap people in ice that were out of control? I sure wouldn't like it. Phillipa

i just tried it. i got in the shower with the water really warm and after a few minutes quickly turned the cold on full blast and just let it hit me for i guess like 2 minutes. then turned the warm back on and got myself warmed up, and turned the cold back on.
i did feel better and more relaxed, while also feeling more alert than usual after a shower. i think im going to start doing this everyday when i take a shower. it feels pretty good afterwards.

i guess i feel as good right now as i normally would after running a mile. but i think i'd rather just take the hot/cold shower than get out and go running.

Frigid water really has helped me get out of acutely dysphoric (but not suicidal) states. The effect only lasts a few hours, and after a week or so, doesn't do much of anything but test my willpower. I've had the same experience with intense aerobic exercise. Might be something to do with hypothermia & glutamate?

My psychiatrist once told me that one of the treatments before effective drugs for panic and anxiety was to wrap the patients in wet sheets or blankets. I don't know if they were were warm or cold, but apparently it was semi-reliable in producing a more relaxed state if only temporarily.

They use it today for autism in France. Controversial.

That's an interesting theory. On a related note, I shocked myself badly while installing some light switch/plug protectors last year. I was probably imagining it, but it seemed to have some type of antidepressant effect, a waking up or anti-anxiety effect. REally powerful shock though. Pretty scary.
