so i saw pdoc on friday. he did up perphenazine but not by much at all.
he seems Really concerned about TD.
so i'm now on 4mg am and 4mg pm.
but then he had me try melatonin for sleep.
he told me 10mg max.
since my sleep and anxiety had been so bad i tried 10mg that first night.
that night the sleep took about 3 or so hours to set on. but GREAT sleep!
next night helped still but not as great.
third night, didnt seem to help nearly as much. i still got out of bed at 11:00 and took gabapentin. So can anyone who uses this tell me. is this typical? does it either work or not?
is 10mg really the max dose?
has this worked well for anyone?thanks

My doctor said that 10mg is the maximum that has been used in drug trials and found to be safe. She also says that compounded melatonin is better than the over the counter stuff from the vitamin store which is apparently highly variable in efficacy.
My first night on melatonin was the best too. It was amazing! The way the tiredness came on, it was like being a kid again.
In my experience, melatonin works -- and works very well -- when I'm in the right state of mind for sleep. When I am anxious, restless and ruminating it is not as effective, I think because I consciously or subconsciously fight sleep.
Otherwise, very natural-feeling sleep commencing 2-3 hours after taking it.
NB: I've experimented with 3 - 6mg but didn't discern any improvement in sleep at higher doses.

so is this stuff something you take over time to help 'regulate' your sleep? or is it day to day just an average sleep aid?
thanks for info.

Since you doc prescribed I'm sure this isn't the case but I've read melatonin can react with some other meds not sure which? Phillipa

seems like my depression is a little more obvious today...could i be getting side effects from melatonin?
or could it be from lethargy or slowed movements from perphenazine?

Both.

> or could it be from lethargy or slowed movements from perphenazine?More likely perphenazine, although you could try a lower dose of melatonin.

Melatonin can worsen depression. Not everyone experiences this, but it happens often enough to be aware of when evaluating changes in mood.
