Going off Nardil after *15 years* - what next?

Posted by davidla on January 25, 2012, at 23:48:02

I'm going off it due to finally being fed up with all the side effects. I take it for social anxiety and depression.

I am very scared to go off it without a plan for what to take next. What non-MAOI should I try? Is there anything remotely like Nardil?

My doc is recommending Cymbalta, but I am not sure why.

Thanks,
David

Have you considered Marplan?

Cymbalta, very bad choice.

There is nothing to substitute Nardil. It stands alone.

The closest you could maybe do is to try to get equal attention to serotonin and NE. That would mean a combo of an SSRI with a TCA, for example zoloft plus nortriptyline, or similar. Again, there is nothing like Nardil.

Cymbalta is a lame effort to accomplish that. The problem is that while it is called a SNRI for marketing purposes, it really isn't....it's almost pure serotonin....only 1 part NE to 9 parts serotonin....and as far as I can tell over the years just about any of the other common antidepressants outperform cymbalta.

The docs get a lot of encouragement from their pharm reps to prescribe cymbalta and there are often under the table incentives to do so.

Clomipramine is a possibility since it hits serotonin and NE equally.

If Nardil is working, you might want to rethink how to deal with the side effects. It wouldn't be the first time for sure, but people often discover that when they stop a med that was working and then return to it again it does not work the second time anywhere near as good as it did the first time.

This seems like a heavy duty risky thing you are doing so I would approach it with a good deal of caution.

These are my opinions on the matter.

Thanks for the input. I am quite concerned about such a big change.

I would love to stay on Nardil.

But I'm tired of having to explain to my little kids why I have to nap every afternoon due to a disturbed circadian rythm. Why I get exhausted when playing with them because I've gained so much weight and have blood pressure issues. There is not enough space here to describe all the side effects. I've tried many ways to mitigate these side effects but with minimal success and often the 'cures' cause their own issues. There is no getting around that.

So what next?

They will keep an eye on your BP with the Cymbalta.
Must be scary going off something that has "worked" all this time.
Good luck.
