Hi,
Does anyone know if 7.5mg or 15mg of Remeron is likely to cause weight gain, as It's such a low dose??I want something to take with Effexor to help me sleep, however, I really do want to avoid putting on any weight. I'm currently taking 50mg of trazodone per night, however, I'm gonna ask my p/doc to take me off the med as it tends to give me headaches.
Thanks!

15mg of remeron for a month didn't help sleep but also taking benzos at same time. Wonder if why? Guess benzos were stronger and over rided the remeron. No weight gain in a month. Phillipa

Yes, it is very likely. Mirtazapine causes weight gain across its entire dose range.

Strangely enough, Mirtazapine killed my appetite at 60 mg.
I don't think you have to worry about weight gain at either 7.5 or 15 mg of Remeron.
What will you do instead of Trazadone?

If you want a sleep aid that wont cause weight gain, try diphenhydramine 50-100mg half an hour before bedtime. If that doesnt work, Ambien would be a logical alternative that wont increase appetite
Yes, the dose of remeron you mention may well cause weight gain.

You will gain weight on 15 mg of remeron. It just plain makes you hungry. But I found it worked beautifully for sleep, and was much easier to tolerate than trazodone. My weight gain leveled off after a few months. As soon as I stopped it I stopped eating as much and lost all the weight I had gained within a month. I tend to now have no interest in food, so I rather miss the remeron. Eating is now a chore rather than an urge. And trazodone for sleep gives the worst hangover. Wish I could take remeron with Emsam, actually, even with the weight gain. I think remeron is good stuff - and I am very med sensitive.
You could always give it a try. I had no withdrawal stopping it, so you could stop if the weight gain became a concern.

I really liked remeron, but found it better to take 3x a week,or less.I have taken 15,7.5,and 3.75mg.I still take sev times per month for great sleep.I do have a little next morning grogginess, but my 1/2 cup coffee takes care of it.Remeron feels really smooth and not harsh to me.I prefer the smaller doses, and I dont have weight gain, since I dont take daily

I take 30 mg. remeron for sleep and have been on it for a year. I found that it initially caused me to gain 10 pounds but that was it. My pdoc and other sources I have read said that weight gain is more of a problem at lower doses than higher doses.

I would say there's a good chance. I was on low-dose Remeron for a few weeks and the hunger, especially for sweets, was intense. I gained 10 pounds just in those few weeks. I've never gained weight from any other psych med. But YMMV.
