Hi. I'm still young and one of the greatest pleasures in life for me is having a couple of beers with some friends but since depression/chronic insomnia came into my life I had to forget about doing that.
It has affected my social life a lot since here in Spain alcohol is almost in every social context and I haven't found an AD compatible with casual drinking.
My experience so far:
-Fluoxetine and alcohol: Even one single beer puts you in a very bad mood.
-Duloxetine : It amplifies alcohol effects a lot and next morning you wake up with the worst hangover.
-Paroxetine : Even one single beer puts you in a very sad mood.
PD: I must insist, I'm not talking about getting drunk but about having a couple of social beers.

Years ago when still drinking and nightly beer after work was given paxil and never had a problem with ad's and alchohol? I have no idea why this happens to you? Did you ever have problems with alchohol? I've not heard this problem before. Phillipa

For me alcohol doesn't mix with ADs when just starting them. Over time when my body got used to them alcohol's effects weren't altered much, although the euphoria was slightly enhanced which meant that the down-time the following days was much worse. On fluoxetine whenever I drank alcohol I would be fine while drinking but the hangover on the following days was so bad, I mean I felt so low emotionally that it's even difficult to describe. It always returned to normal couple of days later but it wasn't worth repeating.
If you really must drink while on ADs or any other psychotropic meds try to minimize the amounts you consume. A little (3 beers max) won't do much harm. More might be gambling with the effectiveness of the drugs your taking for your mood or whatever reason you take them.-Ikaros
