food addiction = depression etc.

Posted by roversreturn on November 14, 2011, at 17:02:00

Hi, i appear to have extreme reactions to a number of allergens that are causing me symptoms of depression, CFS and anxiety.

I am quite literally addicted to these foods i.e. i can eat 4 blocks of cheese in one go or 4 family bags of chocolate buttons (to use an extreme example). These foods make me feel better initially ('high' or maybe even manic) and then i get a horrible withdrawal period with worsened fatigue, depression, back pain, flu-like symptoms (lasts days). This is only relived when i eat the foods which i crave.

Has anyone had/have similar issues and how long should absistence take for me to feel better? I have heard that allergic substances in the brain act like endogenous opiods, so i was wondering whether i will just carry on feeling depressed like people on opiate withdrawal?!

If anyone has any thoughts on such matters i would appreciate their advice!!

Thanks

Rover

I have a similar experience and I always assumed it was carb cravings caused related to the depression. I cant say for certain if any of these foods gives me some allergic reaction.
I also get worse after I consume those foods and Im still not 100% certain if I have CFS / fatigue or what.
The only drug that has ever kept the carb cravings in check is topamax.
Stimulants can also work.. NE reuptake inhibitors can do something with the way the body processes fats I think. But even amphetamines never helped my carb cravings for long, and I refuse to raise the dose for anything other than my ADD symptoms.

Do you take any psycotropics? That might help with the depression, then you would not be as hungry. Or maybe you are having side effects from a med that make you hungry.

Hi, what do you define as psychotropics, do you mean stimulants...i don't, i suppose i get my 'kick' from certain foods. At the moment i just take 25mg seroquel and 100mg riluzole, in previous times i have tried a variety of AD's with little response.

I should add that i generally feel preety good for the 24-48 hours after eating certain foods.

cheers
