Where in the U.S. are there centers that are doing top notch work in brain imaging such as fMRI that also have an emphasis on clinical work (i.e. translating scan results into therapy) for anxiety, social anxiety, depression and dysthymia? I would also appreciate names of individual researchers/clinicians at those institutions.
I know the limitations of such scans, but we may be willing to give it a try as medications are only partially effective. There is a center close to us that does SPECT scans for this purpose, but a neurologist explained to my husband that the SPECT is a "poor man's MRI".
What recent advances have been made in using imaging for diagnosis and treatment? I've read the descriptions of the various types of imaging, but are there different indications for each type?
Thanks!

Is this something your insurance is covering? If so, did your pdoc refer you or how did you get to the point where you were able to get a brain scan for a mental illness?

I'd have thought PET scanning would be the ultimate, but it is likely to not lead to anything significant.
