I've been taking 15mg of Ambien for insomnia from taking Parnate. The Ambien at that dosage works well *if* I follow some guidelines: must be ready to sleep 15-30 minutes after taking it, must sleep 8-9 hrs, and cannot have any interruptions during the night. If I don't follow those rules I am screwed. I've also had the typical Ambien memory loss which scares me. I don't have any memory loss at 10mg of Ambien but I also don't sleep. My pdoc suggested I take 8mg Rozerem & 10mg Ambien. I've read Rozeram is basically a melatonin pill. With my insurance it's $60 a month. What's your experience with Rozerem?

Could I suggest 10mg of Ambien and 50mg of dipehnhydramine (Benadryl) as an alternative?

Isn't rozeram the one you can take as needed through the night? Phillipa

My pdoc told me to take it at bedtime so I don't think so.

Rozerem helped me sleep, but induced, wild vivid dreams which woke me in the middle of the night.

I thought that was Sonata - maybe they both are, I dont know much about Rozarem, except that its new, expensive and non addictive (andf not highly regarded by most insomniacs)
Is it any better than the melatonin you can buy for $3 for a hundered?

Jono yes you are right and not to be combined with luvox and quite a lot of other meds and amnesia still prevalent. From Wiki Phillipa

Rozerem is a melatonin agonist--its mechanism of action, hitting Melatonin 1 and 2 receptors, but not MT3 receptors (if I remember correctly), supposedly allows it to induce sleep without causing depression. However, I can tell you from personal experience that this is not always true: it definitely increased my depression, as did its cousin agomelatine. So be aware of that possibility, if you're depressive or bipolar. It may not be very likely, as I don't think it showed up in trials (melatonin itself is known to cause depression on occasion).
Anyway, rozerem was mildly effective for sleep, for me, but no more than that, and definitely not worth the lowering of mood and near-suicidality it inflicted on me. Any hangover you might get with it, though, will likely be much less severe than with a benzo or Lunesta. It's just a less powerful, more subtle drug, that way.
And, yes, it's sonata that you can take in the middle of the night (because the half-life is so short).

Thank you for all the replies. I haven't tried the Rozerem yet. I increased my Parnate to 40mg. After reading here that sometimes insomnia becomes less severe on a higher dosage, I reduced the Ambien to 10mg and so far it's work OK. I still have a few nights a week when I wake up at 3am and can't go back to sleep, but it's much better than it was. I've already started to feel less zombie like.
I've only been using Parnate for a couple of months so I'd rather not introduce a third medication until I really need it.
This is the end of the thread.
