I have used both, but cannot remember well enough my experience with Tegretol to be able to make a comparison. I like Tileptal. I have seen it work for both impulsivity and aggression. I have also seen it work for bipolar hypomania, mixed-states, and rapid-cycling. For me, it didn't help with depression, but I did not experience sedation or brain-fog. Trileptal was weight-neutral for me. With Tegretol, you would probably need to take regular blood tests to screen for agranulocytosis. With Trileptal, there is no need for this, although hyponatremia is a concern.

Tegretol made me a zombie, and worsened my depression significantly. Never have I disliked a med quite as much as that one. Believe I did have to get lab work done while taking it.
