I am starting my effexor taper and am down to 75 mg of XR now adding 20 mg of prozac tomorrow AM and have already started the process of 10 mg of Focalin Pdoc has warned me that the hardest part will be from 37.5 to none....so looks like she is in agreement and aware of the difficulty this med can cause. We are starting the prozac now to help avoid complications dropping from 37.5 down.....Wish me luck and let me know if anyone has any other suggestions.....I think someone mentioned Benadryl?

Dont let the storys scare you, I taperedfrom 150mg to nil over 4 days and only had some anxiety which was easily managed by Valium...... it is extremely difficult for some people, but for others it is very easy to stop.

I tend to agree with Jono. My neighbor tappered off in a week or so. Does use xanax though in quite high doses to me. Good luck. Hope it's easy or not wicked. Sometimes I feel it's what you expect that you experience. The archieves used to full of withdrawal posts from effexor and other meds might want to also google them. Phillipa

Phillipa,
I think sometimes it's true that what you expect will happen but in my case it's absolutely not true. I expected it to be easy and then my first "official" taper of paxil from 20mg. to 0 over a 10 week period ended up disasterous and I was expecting it to go off without a hitch.
I just think some people get lucky. That's the only way I can explain why I've had the problems I've had trying to come off of paxil on numerous occasions. Believe me, if you saw how it affected me even going slow you wouldn't have believed it.
Good luck in your taper. God willing you will be just fine!

My taper from paxil CR was my worst ever!!!!! I can still remember laying on the floor at work hoping I would just die to end my pain.....that said....I am just crossing my fingers that the combination of meds I am on will help me in my switch....the effexor has been helpful but the weight gain, and fatigue are so unbearable.....I am going to lose my job if I dont switch....being a single parent with no support system around that just cant happen or we will be homeless

How did the paxil work for you? Did it cause weight gain as well? Fatigue?
So Effexor is definitely causing both of those for you? At what dose?
Thanks!

The idea of substituting prozac for a shorter acting AD is a good one. Also, having a few tablets of a binzo tranquilizer on hand can be very helpful, just taking one pill if things get bad can be very comforting.

Paxil and Effexor were almost identical for me- weight gain and fatigue but effective- eventual poop out with both- and yeah I have klonopin on hand :)
