Weight/Med Selection?/Depression

Posted by clubfitter on September 8, 2011, at 18:26:37

How important has the potential for weight gain become in selection of you meds? For me it is priority one. I have lost 110 lbs and don't want to gain any weight back. That would make me very depressed....you too? catch 22 with most of these meds....ugh!

It's huge for me. I gained 55 pounds on various trials of AAPs. (They worked really well for me. I felt much better when taking them, but then would gain 10 pounds in a month.). I got off the AAPs, lost 50 pounds and feel much better about my body. My sex life is better, since my husband couldn't stand my being fat. I have still had problems with depression, but chose not to go off parnate and try nardil because of the likely weight gain. Right now I am managing the depression with DBT and, frankly, this seems to help more consistently than any medication.

I completely understand your frustration; it is a catch 22. The problem with using possible weight gain as a decision maker, is that everyone reacts differently to drugs. Common side effects for Effexor are weight loss and insomnia, yet I gained 50lbs the first year & a half on Effexor and have never slept better. Unless you've been on that drug before you'll never really know how it will effect you. Also, in my experience, side effects typically change or may subside after a few months. Is there a particular drug you have in mind?
