SSRIs and ear problems

Posted by Franz on August 23, 2011, at 0:19:55

Hi, I searched this forum and I read previous posts about Prozac and tinnitus.

Here is my experience:

Escitalopram cause me a mild ear pain.

Fluoxetine seems to make worse tinnitus. In silence I used to always hear a high pitch sound, baut now on Prozac it is worse and I can hear it more often, not just in silence.

I am worried. I do not want to have hearing loss or a permanent sound.

What do you recommend? I will comment with the psychiatrist but I am sure he would not know about this side effect.

Thanks.

Hi Franz,

Thanks to being on psych meds, I have a hearing loss and tinnitus.

Knowing what I now know, as soon as these side effects appeared, I would have gotten off of the meds in a heartbeat which I finally did several years later. Dealing with tinnitus and struggling with a hearing loss make the cure worse than the disease.

You're right, you're psychiatrist will not know about this. And many of them will deny these side effects. Not saying yours will but be prepared.

So really, you have to make the decision as to what you want to do.

Good luck.

Thanks 49er, sorry about your ear problems. Ear problems are listed in the packet insert of Prozac as occasional: ear pain, tinnitus, etc.

I have an appointment with a otorhinolaryngologist to check my ears.

I don´t see how one can determine if the problem is from a drug.

Hi Franz,

Thanks!

Good luck with your appointment.

Regarding your concern about knowing whether a problem is from a drug, I agree that in some cases, it is hard to tell.

But in my opinion, if your tinnitus is worse since going on Prozac, I think you can reasonably assume that it is the culprit since it is listed as a side effect.

Ear Dr. told me he had patients with the same problem due to fluoxetine. I have to take some auditory tests.

Hi Franz,

That is interesting that he has seen patients with the same problems due to the drug. That is good he didn't deny your problems.

Please keep us posted as to the results.

I would think any can cause this problem but it depends on the person.

Ear Dr told me that the tests results show that the drug can be aggravating the tinnitus. Recommendation is to lower the dose or quit Prozac. Another patient had to stop it and after some time take this medication for the ears:
