I have been eating a lot of coco powder lately. I definately go through withdrawl if I stop (insomnia, anxiety, mood swings). Nevertheless, I remain relatively stable and undepressed when I do eat it.
I have a few other herbs which I use routinely (ginger root, green tea) and omega-3. Overall I've been doing very well. I've been working every day (at a fairly stressful job). Ocassionally I use some ativan and melatonin.
I stopped using magnesium since it makes me depressed and irritable (strange I know). I use a bit of amitriptyline occasionally too.
I'm not 100%, but the herbs work as well for me as most pharmacudicals did.

Linkadge.
I'm glad you have gleaned benefit from your treatment regime. I hope you continue to improve and reach a stable state that you are happy with.
You deserve to be at 100%. When the time is right, I'm sure you will be. Managing stress (distress) should be one area of focus of your long-term recovery. For awhile, I made lists of things that I could do to manage and reduce stress in order to help prevent treatment breakthrough and relapse.
Good luck with work. Don't be a stranger.

I agree with you Link. Biologically compatible substances have given me significantly better results than at any time during 15 years of all the psych meds and ECT.
I used to look at the meds as gods, as the answer, the only answer. I see many people here doing the same thing. It took a while, a decade and half, but eventually I realized this god was not one at all, but rather a master of deception. My body and brain needed other stuff. Meds have their place and play an important role. But as the end-all-answer, or for longterm usage, not. That road almost always has a poor prognosis, as most of us are witness to.

that is absolutely plausible. there is significant phenylethylamine in cocoa. how much cocoa powder (raw grams) do you take a day? how often do you have to take it? you can search the board for some of my posts about PEA. bottom line is that it worked extremely effectively for my depression, but i built up serious tolerance and eventual addiction, but i required large doses, taken every 3 hours, of raw PEA. i'm sure bound in the cocoa it is probably released slowly and there may be other components in chocolate (therombine) which makes you feel good too.
how long have you been doing this? what are you combining with? is this the only thing that has worked? has tolerance set in? tell us!

It has a lot of zinc, which has antidepressant properties and is deficient from most people's diet
practicing hedonism is probably good, too
