In reply to geodon what dose does it work?, posted by cee on May 16, 2011, at 12:16:30
it didnt really do anything for me.
but i will let you know that just as advisory when i doubled my dose (per pdoc instructions) in about a week i became very suicidal and somewhat psychotic.
now i doubt that reaction is common but i have to at least tell everyone of my experience with it because it got so terrible severe all within a week.
so if you happen to try it just be vary aware of your state at each titration of the medication.Best Best wishes.

It didn't help me. I went as high as 60mg x5 a day. It made me diabetic, which went away after discontinuing it. I was very paranoid, hearing voices and anxious on it. I didn't replace my zyprexa sad to say. Oh, and made my vision very blurry, which went away after discontinuation. I think I took it for about a year. I was very angry on it. I'm having a better time with perphenazine now. But still taking the zyprexa. I've been on zyprexa now 13 years.

For uncomplicated depression, most people respond to 40mg. Some need 80mg. Beyond that, no further improvement is usually gleaned.

i think i started at 80 and doubled to 160 thats when problems happened.
i had to go off it.
and i cant say i've heard a lot of people having luck with it, but not necessarily problems, just that it didnt do much.
BUT you never know...AND its supposed to be weight neutral if thats an issue.Best Wishes.

you could overlap them...how much seroquel were you on, and how much are you on now? I'm not personally a fan of using 2 antipsychotics at once, but if it has to happen..so be it.
I just read online that there are case reports of cardiovascular problems following treatment with a combination of seroquel and geodon. How common this is, I have no idea.
What you might want to ask your doctor about is leaving the seroquel at a comfortable dose and then increasing the Geodon, then lowering the seroquel once you're on a steady dose of the Geodon.
What problems are you having with the medication change? You might want to consider a tranquilizer or something to get you over the transition phase.
Good luck!

Geodon changed my daughter's life. As is not uncommon, she was treated for ADHD from early childhood. As she hit her teens, the (I now realize) hypomania that had always been characteristic of her 'personality' ramped up considerably. 18 months ago, though, she 'crashed & burned' in a big way... for which I'm grateful because it led to the bipolar diagnosis. She is 16 now.
She started out on Abilify, which was a terrible experience. She had an immediate voracious appetite and developed several of the worst side effects. I think she was only on it about two weeks. Geodon, however, was a miracle. It took several months for her to adjust to the sense of loss she experienced with respect to the hypomania. Hypomania feels spectacular to the one experiencing it - and it's hard for them to 'get' how much it interferes with their functioning and how awful it can be for everyone around them.
Bottom line is that it was not until her bipolar was treated (she continues treatment for comorbid ADHD), that 'she' rose to the surface. I'd been parenting bipolar for so long.. and it was delightful to watch the child I'd only gotten obscure glimpses of.. rise to the surface and develop.
Dosage-wise.. she started out on lower doses, which were raised when her core symptoms of hypomanic episodes and unremitting distractibility (racing thoughts, etc.) She now takes 60mg in the morning, and 60mg in the evening (total 120 mg./day). My understading is that splitting doses is not the typical way to do it, but it has been what works best for her. She considers Geodon her 'best friend.'

Thanks b2c :-) It has been a very, very long & treacherous road. I received the greatest gift when recently she told me how glad she was that I stuck by her and (her words) "didn't give up on her." She feels like the whole world is open to her now... that she can achieve whatever she wants.. without bipolar getting the upper hand and dragging her down. I don't think it'll necessarily be 'easy'... but she's got a good head on her shoulders, and I am proud of her determination.Solstice
