I took trazadone for years to help with sleeping. with it I sleep like a baby, without it I get no more than 30 minutes of sleep at a time. I discontinued it due to the dangerous interaction with Nardil. What over the counter sleep meds can be taken with MAOI's?

Some people do take trazodone with parante. You could try a z-drug (zopilone etc.) Some TCAs are likely safe with parnate (surmontil, maybe amitriptyline). Some people do a low dose of seroquel.

I actually take 100mg trazadone with parnate. My p-doc said these interactions are rarely a problem and I should just familiarize myself with early signs of serotonin syndrome in case there is a problem. I've been taking trazadone for nearly a year without any problems. Every time I fill the presciption though, the pharmacy calls my p-doc. I also take 1mg of lorazapem every night.
OTC sleep meds mostly contain anti-histamines which are contra-indicated with MAOIs. Will your p-doc give you a scrip for a benzo. Insomnia is a big problem for me with parnate and I find that lorazapem puts me to sleep and trazadone keeps me asleep through the night.

thanks emmanual, that makes sense. so with that combination there is naturally a risk of seritonin syndrone but not necessarly a risk of hypertensive crisis? I'm quite familar with seritonin syndrone and know it's something that builds up gradually over time and once reconized can be corrected.

In my experience I started feeling terrible during the intitial stages, it progressed worse and worse over the course of a few days until i knew something was definately wrong. Turned out the combo of 60 mg paxil, buspar, and wellbutrin was just too much for me. now I recognize the early signs (severe sweating, severe fatigue, high blood pressure, and a feeling of being completelly disconnected).

to clarify I began having symptons 2-3 days prior to full blown seritonin syndrome.

I'm sorry Phillipa but I don't quite understand your question, are u asking what the chances of seritonin syndrone by taking 2 low doses of SSRI's? if that's your question the chances are very low. I have tried many types of combination therapy. Lithium for example can be combined with almost any other SSRI. When I got sick it was due to a very high dose of paxil, a very high dose of wellbutrin, and added buspar which increases the effect of both meds. I have very treatment resistant depression and anxiety and I think my dr. had good intentions but simply pushed the envelope too far. After begging several phyciatrist for MAOI's I finally found a nurse practisioner to prescribe Nardil under close supervision. I'm excited at the possibility of getting my life back.

The affinity of trazodone for the serotonin transporter is low. The antidepressant effect may be more due to direct neurotransmitter receptor interaction.

Though I hate the drugged feeling and hangover effect of Trazodone, I took it for years with Nardil without a problem. I'm talking dosages probably too low for any antidepressant effect, 100mg. I've also taken Seroquel at between 12.5 and 25mg. It also has a hangover effect. Right now I usually use about 50mg of Benadryl when I have trouble sleeping. I've cut my clonazepam down from 2mg to .5mg on the way to 0 because of the memory problems with benzos. I am really sensitive to the histamine drugs. This is good, because insomnia with Nardil never really goes away; and I'm a lifer.
Good Luck,
Jedi
