Large room/shrinking self experience

Posted by Trotter on January 15, 2011, at 16:29:12

When I woke up this morning I had a weird experience. The room seemed much too large and me relatively small by comparisom. I also felt a little dizzy/fuzzy headed. I managed to get control of the situation by getting up and concentrating my mind.

I've experienced this weird 'big room/shrinking self' a few times before in my life, but it is a pretty rare event. Quite frankly, it freaks me out. Anyone know what this is? Is this a recognized psychological symptom? Does it have a name?

This has been happening to me for years. It started after I started psych drugs. I had just been discharged from the ward and I was sleeping in my own bed for the first night. It was very strange and caused me great anxiety the first few nights. It only happens to me in a dark room. I have come to accept it as harmless. I would like to know if there is a name for it and if it is an organic part of an illness or a common side effect. Thanks for sharing this. I always assumed I was crazy.

Since I was a small child I have had a similar sensation, that my self is tiny but my body is huge. It's uncomfortable and lasts only a few minutes. It also doesn't happen that often, so I've never really mentioned it to anyone
