Gabapentin and cancer

Posted by Gazner on January 11, 2011, at 3:05:12

I have been taking 2700 mg of Gabapentin, daily, for over ten years, along with an antidepressant, to treat Bipolar II disorder. Last year, I had noninvasive breast cancer. In my family, we have very little cancer of any kind. I read that Gabapentin can cause cancer in rats and some people. I'm thinking of dumping this medication, although it has helped me greatly. Please comment.

It makes me go red in the face. It makes people hot. I winder if it increases inflammation. Like most pharmaceuticals.

That is all I know.

Have you tried Klonopin? Its not the best thing in the world, but it relieves anxiety and it has mood-stabilizing properties. I think it can augment antidepressants and help w/ side-effects. Its cheaper than gabapentin, too.

Oh my more med scares now calcium causes plaque on arteries and heart attacks. I still say the benzos have a good track record. Phillipa

Probably not the gabapentin. There are thousands of cases of breast cancer each year linked to neither genetics nor drug exposure. Humans are much different than rats. If it is working well do not give up on it. Untreated bipolar disorder has a much higher mortality rate than treated breast cancer.

Yeah, I think the benzos get a bad rep for almost nothing...I mean, I get that they're abusable and cause dependence, but..they're pretty safe. I think it'd be better to have a low-level "addiction" to therapeutic amounts of benzos than to expose yourself to all kinds of crazy drugs that are less "addictive," but don't have the same track record of (relative) safety. Then again...I'm not a doctor, lol.

Yes benzos are safe providing you probably will take them the rest of your life... Klonopin is a bit more depressing I've heard than xanax. I take xanax 1.5 mg. and it does help.

I also take wellbutrin (bupropion) and have wondered if that could be carcinogenic.

But benzos are very little side effects, except for when you decide to discontinue them. I can stay at the same dosage and not increase; although some people end up escalating the dosage because they become tolerant and it no longer works..... good and bad about benzos. Too bad they can't make an exact drug except for the addictive properties!
