Zyprexa Withdrawal GI problems

Posted by John Short on November 18, 2010, at 15:44:39

I was taken off Zyprexa abruptly 9 months ago due to side effects (akathisia, EPS). Since then, I've had ongoing GI issues (heartburn, nausea, abdominal pain). Nothing my GI doc has given me has helped including PPIs 2-3 times/day, carafate, and levsin for spasms. I've had multiple tests and finally had my gall bladder removed. I called my former psychiatrist who told me that "my stomach would love Zyprexa" and it did while on it. She tells me that Zyprexa rewires the messages from my brain to my stomach to make less acid. When the drug was stopped, that benefit was lost and the effect is permanent. Has anyone heard of this effect and a possible solution? I'm currently existing on cream of rice and have lost 20 lbs.

First welcome to babble. See you are new. As for your question I've not seen anyone post this before. Have you had a second opinion? Did you google the zyprexa and see if ever happened to anyone else. So sorry. Phillipa

All I can think to do (as a complete non-professional) would be to start back on the zyprexa, only maybe a lower dose w/ some comedication (propranolol, clonazepam, neurontin) to counter the side effects.

what was your dosage before? I think the pills come in strengths as low as 2.5 milligrams, and with a pill cutter you can go even lower.
