What happens to my brain on psych meds?

Posted by Deneb on November 11, 2010, at 12:47:30

OK, does anyone know what actually happens when we take meds?

I'm interested in the details.

So, like, what happens exactly when my Prozac or Celexa or Risperdal reaches my brain?

Deneb I don't think anyone really knows exactly. I'm sure if they do they will post it. Phillipa

No one knows exactly, but we have better understanding of it now. Maybe I will post something tomorrow ... right now I am in pain and very tired.

Wait! I just remembered that you were a psych nurse. You must have learned how the medications work. Even if they were the older meds you must have had some background pharmacology. Didn't you?

Maxie most of the meds were the SSRI's and benzos, and antipsychotics, clozaril was just getting started. At that time had to call a telephone number if a patient was going on it as they had to be regisistered. Nurses were taught what a meds brand, generic names were, their purpose, and the correct doseages, and side effects. No neurotrasmitter stuff. Just that serotonin baths in the synapses and the brain gets more of it. That's it. And working in mostly cardiac units, cancer, ICU, triage for ER, Post op and med/surg. Knew more about those meds and mostly Iv not orals. We mixed our own bags of antibiotics and insulin drips and stuff like that. Physch. Lots of klonopin and no TCA's no Maoi's ever were used and new atypicals were not out yet. Then in chemical dependency it was get people off of drug without detox. So lots of benzos and clonodine. Then some got an SSRI and some lithium if the doc thought they might be bipolar. Phillipa

I wonder if nurses today are trained on the pharmacology end of things. Probably not. Next time I am in the psych ward I will ask! LOL!

Different countries have different cirriculums and different degrees from diploma, associates, BA, Masters, PHD. Why not google cirriculum for nursing? Phillipa
