Question for those who've tried MAOIs

Posted by Conundrum on November 8, 2010, at 11:17:51

So I've been looking at some of the response for nardil and parnate on askapatient. not the most reliable source of information, but hey, I found this interesting.

Go here:
http://www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=11909&name=NARDIL

Now press Control + F and a search field comes up. Type in anhedonia, and the word appears twice in the page, saying that nardil helped relieve anhedonia. Now delete anhedonia and type in numb, nothing should come up. try it again with empty and flat. nothing comes up.

Now try it with parnate.
http://www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=12342&name=PARNATE

Press control + F to bring up the search. Type in anhedonia, and no one has used that term. Type in flat, then again with numb, and once again with empty and you will see people claiming parnate made them feel that way.

Is this a common experience with parnate? Emmanuel I remember you said parnate helped with anhedonia. Did it help anyone else? Did Nardil help?

and might be interesting for those who haven't (nm)

Conundrum,

When MAOIs worked for me, they alleviated all of my symptoms, including anhedonia. For as long as I benefited therapeutically from MAOIs, I never felt numb, flat, or empty on them. When Nardil worked, it was about as effective on my anhedonia as Parnate and Marplan were when they worked. The biggest problem that I had with MAOIs (which is the same problem that I've had with most antidepressant treatments) is that they didn't keep working. Both Marplan and the version of tranylcypromine manufactured by Goldshield brought my symptoms into remission for about three days and then just about completely stopped working. Film-coated Nardil brought my symptoms into remission for about two weeks, the Australian Nardil brought my symptoms into remission for about a month when taken in enteric capsules, and Pfizer's Nardil brought about a robust antidepressant response for about two months when I took it in enteric capsules. Of course, not everybody is going to have the same problems with MAOIs that I had. Some patients actually seem to be able to get a consistent response out of them, and my guess is that the medications' effectiveness in treating anhedonia will vary from person to person. It'll be interesting to see what others have to say.

That is very interesting. I'm sure you'll get some experienced input.

Did you ever take the pfizer nardil without modifying its encapsulation and if so what happened?

Were there any cognitive benefits with the MAOis?

Conundrum,

See below for my responses...

> Did you ever take the pfizer nardil without modifying its encapsulation and if so what happened?

Actually, no. I started with the Australian Nardil and was taking the regular film-coated tablets before I decided to put the contents of the tablets into enteric capsules. Before I used the enteric capsules, I experienced remission on the film-coated Australian Nardil for about two weeks after raising my dose from 60 to 75 mg. Upon reducing the dose back down to 60 mg, I also experienced a two-week-long remission. Putting the contents of the Australian Nardil tablets into enteric capsules prolonged my remission to a month, so when I got the psychiatrist I was seeing at the time to prescribe me Pfizer's Nardil, I just continued to use the enteric capsules that I was using for the Australian Nardil. As I've said, I did well on that version of Nardil for about two months.

I really didn't notice any cognitive benefits per se (improvements in learning or memory) when I took MAOIs, but then again, my cognition was pretty good back then. However, I would say that MAOIs were incredibly effective at reducing the severity of my psychomotor retardation (which some might consider to be a cognitive symptom) when they worked for me.

Ace if he chimed in would have a lot to say as nardil is a wonder med for him or at least last time he was here. Phillipa
