Dexedrine or Adderall?

Posted by SheilaC on November 7, 2010, at 14:25:15

Which drug is less likely to cause hypomania and mood issues?

Anyone ever try both and know?

I've been on both. Right now I am on Adderall XR. Even though I was using the long acting Dexedrine (twice a day)it wore off too early and I became depressed and grumpy. Now I take 30 mg of Adderall XR and I am good for the day. I have never taken the regular version of Adderall.

When it comes to stims, everyone reacts differently and I think you should try both and then decide which one works for you best.

Neither. Stimulants don't really have an inherent risk of causing hypomania.

Stimulants do or don't cause hypomania?

I've been on both and for me I'd say Adderall is better overall than Dexedrine. Adderall has Dexedrine it in - it's made up of dextroamphetamine (dexedrine) and amphetamine salts.

I've taken both regular release and extended release of both and Adderall wins again.

Adderall for me is more smooth acting and doesn't have as much of a crash than Dexedrine - it also help my mood in more ways than Dexedrine.

But as you know we all react differently to meds so your milage may vary.

Vyvanse is even smoother than Adderall XR. It helped me with mood as well.

Why is it that in addition to the good benefits I get out of Adderall I do still get hypomanic when I take it?

Vyvanse was really bad - I couldn't sleep at all.

If these meds DON'T make you hypomanic, than why do they seem to make me hypomanic?

Both meds are a mood-rollercoaster for some people. Sometimes one or the other works better.
supposedly dexedrine is heavier on dopamine, but I havent been able to find legitimate research that says that specifically.

I've seen people complain of insomnia on Vyvanse. I think this is do to its really long half life.

Becoming easily irritated when it wears off and unable to fall asleep easily. When I skip a dose on the weekend, it takes a couple days for my mood to settle down (settle back to being a nice person).

It can also tend to make me a little hyper - but maybe it is supposed to, it is a stimulant.

I guess the negative is the moodiness from the come down and skipping doses. I get downright mean and angry for no reason.

Coming down off a stimulant can cause one irritability. Feeling hyper/racy on a stimulant is usually a side effect of the amphetamine.

This 'crash' you experience when the stimulant wears off can be treated by Clonidine or Intuniv (Guanfacine).

The other question begged by you becoming hyper on amphetamines, rather than calmed is, 'Do you really have ADHD?' Aren't you bipolar as well?

Yes, I am BP which is why I am taking the Geodon. But my doc says that I need to go up on my dose and even maybe split my dose of Geodon instead of taking it all at night. She thinks that if I still have irritability I need more stabilization.

I just seem to feel better on a low dose (10mg. ) of Adderall. I have more motivation to do things, work out, stick to a schedule and just think more clearly. Also, I get a small antidepressant effect from the Adderall without the side effects of an antidepressant.

For now, doc says to take 40mg of Geodon in am with Adderall and 40mg in pm.

I think this will help. I have been missing some stability during the daytime.

An 80 mg dose is still short of being truly therapeutic. Ask your doctor if you can go up to a 120 mg dose.

What mood stabilizer are you on?

And the Adderall may just be treating the attentional problems that come with being bipolar.

Actually, I am using Geodon as my mood stabilizer and it is working! I tried Depakote and Lithium and they made me depressed. I feel like I have tried all of them. Currently, I am taking 80mg Geodon, 1.5mg Klonopin and 10mg Adderall.

We'll see how things are in a week on this combo.

My doc did say that we have A LOT of room to play on the Geodon. So far, it is the ONLY med that has really helped my mood. It takes away the agitated irritability I have with my BP.

Plus, I am prone to low moods, so the Adderall and actually the Geodon help with that.

I have tried Lamictal (it broke my mouth out in ulcers), Trileptal, Tegretol, Depakote, Ability, Lithium, etc.

It's pretty bad when Lithium depresses you.
