Adderall with mood stabilizer?

Posted by SheilaC on October 27, 2010, at 16:57:03

I recently stopped taking Adderall due to the fact that it was causing some mood instability. But, even now that I am not taking it, I still feel that 60mg of Geodon isn't making me as stable as I should be. My doc says we have lots of room to play with Geodon.

I really miss my dose of Adderall. It was a good motivator, gave me focus, energy, etc. I am wondering if I do up my Geodon (like my doc mentioned we could) to 80mg and stay constant with my Klonopin, if I could get away with adding back a small dose of Adderall in the morning?

I don't know if a higher dose of Geodon would rev me up or slow me down?

You won't know until you try a higher dose of Geodon. Typically the more Geodon the calmer you get. But you could be one of those exceptions. Try raising the Geodon (talk to your doctor first) before adding the adderall.

adderall can have major mood effects on some folks. I dont go much higher than 10mg BID.. too much up and down in mood and energy for me.
I was taking it along with an SSRI and that made me a little more immune to the swings.
Otherwise Id look into swapping it for dexedrine (more dopamine, less NE) or maybe methlyphenidate.
Maybe even an ER version would be enough to make a difference. Or taking more frequent, smaller doses and going right to bed when it wears off.
Stims can be really touchy when youre changing things around, youd be surprised.

Do you have any bipolar or rapid cycling tendencies? I find it interesting that taking an SSRI helped with the swings. They are "suppose" to make them worse. Any idea why?

I have PTSD and some cyclothymia that goes with it, but nothing serious like bipolar.
Ive never found any research that explains exactly WHY antidepressants are destabilizing to bipolars, so I cant really say what makes me different.
I think it may be because my mood variations are due to PTSD hyperarousal and emotional flashbacks, rather than an inherent inability to maintain a level mood.
