Delay onset of ambien (or any medication)

Posted by anodyne on October 16, 2010, at 13:05:27

Does anyone have any experience on techniques to delay the onset of a medication? I have a strange case of chronic insomnia where I go to sleep fine, but wake up at 3am almost every night. I can take 5mg of ambien and it takes care of it and I am up at 7am not problems. The bad part is 1) I still wake up and lose an hour of sleep waiting for the ambien to kick in and 2) sometimes I wake up at 4am and its too late to take anything.

I have tried ambien cr, and found that it to be the best solution so far but it actually wears off too quickly is somewhat overkill for me as it is too much medicine and I am trying to keep the does as small as possible to avoid tolerance issues.

I have tried almost all other sleep medications, and ambien is the only one that doesn't have side effects for me.

I was thinking some sort of capsule that didn't dissolve for a few hours that I could put the ambien in and take when I went to bed, but have been unable to locate something like that.
Another thought was to try and take the outer coating off an abien CR as this may be the immediate release part of the medicine, but this seems difficult and Im not sure what I am doing.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi welcome could it be posible to buy just empty gelatin capsules at the pharmacy and add just a bit of the ambien for when you wake up? I have have the four hour wake up most of my adult life and just take a small dose of sleep med then. That allows me to go back to sleep. Phillipa

Glad to hear I am not the only one with the four hour wake up issue. I have also been dealing with it by taking a small amount when I wake up, but was hoping to find some way to avoid waking up in the first place and having to wait for the medicine to kick in.
