Which AD for this?

Posted by SheilaC on August 28, 2010, at 7:58:49

So, both Geodon and Lithium work for mania at low doses for me, but now that I am "stable" I am somewhat in a low mood.

I know the best med would be Lamictal, but I already had a very bad reaction to it and can't take Lamictal.

So, my question is, what AD or AD-like med would be a good choice?

I do have more or an agitated anxiety / depression.

I'm scared of Wellbutrin - it has made me very mean in the past.

Not really sure.

Don't know what other ADs you've taken in the past, so not sure how helpful this will be.

I've got an anxious depression, atypical depression, Bipolar II, whatever you want to call my neurosis, and am now taking Nardil, which I'm lovin' at the moment. But MAOIs aren't for everyone, that's for sure.

Zoloft made me yawn all the time and feel tired, but some people find it's a stimulating SSRI. Prozac just made me feel numb; I wasn't depressed anymore, but just didn't care about much of anything. Was just going through the motions on Prozac. I found Paxil to be a very calming but energizing drug, so that would get my vote as to what be a good choice. I had to stop Paxil, though, after I gained 20 pounds (almost 10 kg) on it. Liked it very much otherwise.

However, don't forget that almost any AD can induce symptoms of mania, so always be careful in adding one on to your regimen to not "upset the apple cart," and make sure a doc is monitoring you closely if you decide to do this.

Good luck, and hope you feel better soon!

Doug

Sheila we all react differently to meds. Wellbutrin also made me appear manic after one week and I'm not. Paxil made me nonfunctional for three months, prozac was too stimulating for me. So doesn't both lithium and geodon act kind of like an ad? Does your doc feel you need to add one? Reason I ask is you sound pretty stable now. Phillipa

You have been on so MANY meds in the last few months that it's hard to know what to suggest. Also, you reactly differently to meds than most people. Maybe you should stay on your current cocktail longer and see what happens. If I remember correctly you haven't been on the Lithium that long. You have to give the med a chance to work. I notice that you jump from med to med and is not advisable. You might me making the jump before the med really starts to work.

I agree with Maxie. Also, it's important to bear in mind that there isn't a med for everything.....and that meds on their own won't necessarily make you well, they only get you part of the way there.

Perhaps if you try Lamictal again and start at 12.5 mg and work up slowly. I don't know what kind of reaction you had. I did get a fine diffuse rash on my thighs when I started, however, being a nurse, I knew what to look out for and chances of getting the real SJS are very rare. 1% or less. Been on 200mg for years. No side effects, except sometimes I'm forgetful with peoples names.
