Can a stressful event cause downward slip?????

Posted by Roslynn on August 18, 2010, at 17:31:03

Hi everyone,

I had been doing decently mood-wise the last few weeks until I attended an event that was stressful and also a change from my usual routine (had to drive at night, later bedtime, etc.)

Following this I experienced a HUGE amount of fatigue, and now my mood is extremely low, where it had been level for several weeks.

Has anyone experienced this? Can anyone explain what happened?

Thank you for any help!

Roslynn

I can tell you from my experience that yes, definitely, a stressful event can cause a downward slip. During stress you release major amounts of cortisol and stress can reduce seratonin, dopamine, and other neurotransmitters.

For me a stressful event can set off my depression especially if the stressful event doesn't completely metabolize. That is, sometimes a stressful event will stay with me for a while. If it does, then I'm having sustained stress and that's not good for my depression.

Also, changes in circadian rhythm such as a disruption in your sleep schedule can be depressogenic. I know that my chronic and persistant insomnia contributes to my depression.

I hope that helps.

For me it causes more anxiety but lifts any depression. Sometimes nothing at all depending on event that I disrupted my schedule for Phillipa

Thank you so much,I had a feeling there was something going on with my brain chemistry. Also, my sleep schedule had changed.

It's too bad we have to be so careful...I can't even go to a party without worrying how it will affect me.

Thanks again for your helpful response!
