lamictal

Posted by markwell on July 30, 2010, at 16:52:05

I started on 25mgs of lamictal last night and I didn't sleep a wink. Does the insomnia go away/ I also felt a little agitated and angry and does that go away?

I got the agitation/anger definitely from the lamictal, no doubt in my mind about that
for me, thank goodness, it did fade away
I suppose it's good to be conscious of the fact that it's happening...I didn't realize at the time that the lamictal could do that
It wasn't fun.... I was a bit unreasonable.
every increase, though less than initially, came with some of that
I didn't have the insomnia then, but another med I was on might have countered that.
What did happen after a while is that my mood improved and I was actually less bothered by a lot of things. I did have periods of being "happy, happy" - that's a little over the top happy too, but again that went away.
Good luck,
sid

25 mg is still such a small dose of Lamictal. You are taking the ramp-up pack, right? It wasn't until about 100 mg that I began to feel the stability I was looking for.

Stopping, starting, or switching meds always gives me at least a minor manic episode. I don't know if you are BP or if this is the way your BP manifests itself, but could you be feeling this effect?

If possible, I suggest you give it a little while longer. However, please know that I am very biased toward Lamictal because of the great results I have had.

Each person has such a different experience with these drugs. I can't take SNRIs at all, they make me a paranoid, anxious mole who can't leave the house. But so many people are helped by them...

Good luck to you.

I had something similar happen to me and it did go away. I also started grinding my teeth, which took a lot of effort to stop.

But it has brought me a stability I have never known.

I will try to start it again...I am using the starting pack. Today I woke up feeling depressed. I'm on my third week of zoloft which doesn't seem to help with racing thoughts.

I've been taking 50mg of Lamictal daily for 8 years now and I generally take in the AM because it really is very stimulating and gives me an anti-depressant effect. Irritability is also increased, but I'll trade that for not being (as)depressed any day. Unfortunately effect wears of after 5 or 6 hours. If I want to be "up" in the evening I'll take my dose at at 1 or 2PM. I just have to be down in the morning. Unfortunatley once daily dose is all that seems to work.

Good luck! Would love to hear experiences with Lamictal. It's the only thing that's worked consistantly for me. I want to know what the anti-depressant mechanism is of this drug and why it works- is it the glutaminergic or serotinergic effects or something else?

Hi there, when I started Lamictal I started at 12.5 mg and not 25 mg Maybe you should ask your doctor about starting at a lower dosage.

Lamictal didn't work for me, but I know that it has helped so many people! I hope it's the med for you.

Are you or have you tried anything for sleep? Some things that come to mind are:

Melatonin-6 to 8 hour time release version
Magnesium-glycinate or taurinate
Glycine
Lemon Balm
GABA
Taurine-small dose between 100 and 500 mg

A combination of all of these at the right doses would surely at least have some impact on falling asleep and sleep quality. It's worth a shot.

Vitamin Shoppe online or locally is a good place to get all of these at an affordable price.

You can also check out iHerb and Vitacost.
