My worst episodes of depression are in the summer when I am generally completely stress free.

Not to be trite, but an idle mind is the Devil's workshop.

I personally identified the link in my life after going on an AD for the first time (Serzone). The med fixed my sleep problems & greatly improved my mood and energy generally, but after a stressful day I would flop in a chair and feel hopeless again.

Adding Buspar to the Serzone did the trick for me -- I know many people don't find it helpful, but I found it abolished the stress/depression cycle quite effectively. My subsequent experience is that it doesn't work as well with every AD, but it's part of my mix today -- with about as low a S/E profile as anything I know, why not? It also adds energy and assertiveness -- for me.

Not to be snappy but, I said stress free, not mentally or physically sedentary.

Sorry for that.... I have noticed the same pattern in myself.
Depressed, more anxious and irritable.
