Are all MAOI's neuroprotective?

Posted by former poster on June 13, 2010, at 1:31:19

I'm concerned as I had been on Nardil for about 10 yrs, quit 4 years ago. I am now giving Emsam a try.

The two MAOIs that are touted as being neuroprotective are selegiline (Emsam) and rasagiline (Azilect). The other MAOIs reduce the creation of free radicals that can damage neuronal mitochondria. However, I don't know the extent to which this can me considered neuroprotective.

Good question, but I don't think we have the evidence to suggest yes at this point. Selegeline and rasigiline are neuroprotective, but this may be independant of their MAOI activity. Some non MAOI derivitives of selegiline are similarly neuroprotective.

An drug is neuroprotective if it protects brain neurons / brain cells.

Oh good my neurons are finally being well protected after 25 years of being unprotected...

Im currently on NArdil and Lithium combo and is is effective, although it's only been about 2 weeks.

So if I'm being neuroprotected now, I guess that is still better than not having any neuroprotection at all.

I guess I still have fairly good mental functioning, as long as I'm not in the doldrums, as my depression is so unpredictable. If damage was done to the neurons, during unsuccessful drug trials which spanned approx 20 years.

Oh well, focus on the positive...here's to Lithium and Nardil keeping me on the up and up and up (uh oh, not too many ups..).
