I have tried lithium several times. Each time i get initial relief, then the blunting effect sets in. A helpless feeling of being in a chemical straitjacket. This is an unbearable feeling for me. I stop taking it after a few days. I once took it for 3 weeks. My social anxiety became extremely bad as I walked through the day without a personality, (erased from the lithium). It took me almost a decade to feel normal again. It was impossible to feel pleasure. If I won the lottery I would not even be able to smile. I had the same effect from other mood stabilizing drugs. Maybe to a lesser degree. I tried resperidal once and it made me psychotic. Same with Neurontin. I have decided to live with the moodswings, which are mostly depressed.

I have Lithium Robot Syndrome, but I know what horrors that lurk beneath the surface of me, and the benefits outweigh the negatives in my case.
I've also started to stop blaming myself for failed social interactions because they don't happen with everyone. Maybe most people are boring and unfunny? I have great times with interesting people. I still have passion for things.
And as for never smiling, I just say I'm from New York where no one smiles.

I felt that way on Lithium as well. It dulled my cognitive skills. But don't give up! There are so many mood stabilisers to try. I am on Trileptal now and it's doing wonders!

Best additive to Nardil so far, hoping the feeling stays for a while since I have been destabalized inthe last few months. I feel like Lithium is the key, right now 450 mg BID and holding steady.

Here is here a paragraph from a website:
http://www.sntp.net/drugs/lithium_breggin.htm
Schou and his two coauthors administered lithium to volunteers, but for too short a period of time to determine its effects. They then gave themselves lithium in doses within the therapeutic range for relatively short periods of one to three weeks.(3) Even though committed to the notion that lithium has no significant effect on "normal volunteers," their self-reports tell a dramatically different story. All three men were markedly emotionally flattened, especially when seen through the eyes of their families. In one case the family considered the blunting effect an improvement in Dad:
