Hi everyone,
Does anyone know how high of a dose of Prozac the doctors will usually prescribe? I know they go up to 60mg but what about 80mg or even higher?
Is there usually any benefit to going above 60?

Hi, when I was on Prozac I had to go up to 100 mg for it to be effective. Luckily I had a pdoc who doesn't mind prescribing more than the max dose if necessary. I was getting some response at 60 mg, but not fully. So he pushed it to 80 mg and I felt a bit better and then 4 weeks later pushed it to 100 mg and that was the magic number for me. At the time I weighed only 76 pounds so the dosage is not weight dependent.
Are you getting any positive effect at 60 mg?

Years ago I had taken 120mg of Prozac and felt fantastic. It didn't last longer than a few months, though. Point is, yes, doctors sometimes do prescribe over 80mg of Prozac and it can work. By the way, 80mg is the max "allowed" dose.

Hi everyone,
thank you for your responses. I am only at 40mg right now and it took some convincing for my doc to ok the increase from 20mg. At one point he wanted me to stop all ADs, thinking I was bipolar. But when he lowers or eliminates the ADs I get depressed.

My Dr is bumping me up from 40 to 80. Going to 60 I could tell a positive difference in mood and not much side effect. Four days into going up to 80 I have upset stomach, insomnia, daytime sleepiness and a horrible taste in my mouth. And no positive difference in mood going from 60 to 80. I'm going to go back down to 60 for another week or so and see if maybe I do better on that dose. Will keep you posted. I am also taking 300 mg Wellbutrin XL.

Thank you for your feedback! I may ask to be moved up to 60mg. I have a bit of a dry mouth though. but if I feel better it is worth it.
