Should I take the advice of Dr. Gillman?

Posted by Laney on May 24, 2010, at 16:03:52

He suggests I add 25mg. Nortriptyline to my present 10mg. paxil and 100mg. sertraline. Obviously I am not his patient as he is in Australia but he thinks it would be safe to take the small amount of Nortrip. with the SSRI's because I've had such a heck of a time coming down from paxil. He said I should be able to do that no problem once on the Nortrip? I can't seem to get a doc to prescribe it here (Washington state). Well I've only asked one but he hasn't gotten back to me and I hate to keep jumpng around from doc to doc. I've seen three P-Docs in the last 4 or so months.

Thanks!

Laney

You could start with 10mg since you're on Paxil.

I don't think nortriptyline will affect Paxil withdrawal very much.

I am surprised that you had difficulties when reducing Paxil from 10mg to 7.5mg whilst on Zoloft, what symptoms did you experience?

Ed,

Symptoms inlude anxiety/nervousness/negativity/pessimism/head squeezing/head pressure/burning eyes/nausea, etc.

Believe me, I thought I would be just fine like you said and for that matter so did Dr. Gillman. I was suprised at it too.

The bummer is I was having a few really good days and then it went down hill after that.

I don't want to order my meds online but I will if I have to.

I can't seem to get my doctor to respond to the request of Nortrip. What would you do if you were me?

THanks,

Laney

Laney don't get it the paxil shouldn't be that hard to come off of. Could it be the zoloft isn't that what your're now on? Phillipa

Phillipa,

No it shouldn't be that hard to come off of but for me it is. I have done some pretty slow tapers and have had to go back on. It sucks. It's not unheard of though. Check out Paxil Progress and you'll find lots of people that have protracted withdrawls and lots that are tapering extremely slowly like over a couple of years.

Hi Laney,

Do you feel any benefit from Zoloft? I think you've been on it for several weeks now.

When is your next appointment with your doctor? Could you discuss nortriptyline then?

I'm very surprised that reducing Paxil to 7.5mg was so unpleasant. Now that you're on 100mg Zoloft, I wouldn't have thought it would be too bad.

Waiting for his reply still. Have left several messages. The other P-doc I've seen won't be back until this Friday.

Doctors don't seem to be fond of TCAs do they? At least not the ones I'm dealing with.

Thanks!

>Doctors don't seem to be fond of TCAs do they?

They lack the marketing hype of the newer drugs. Most TCAs are dangerous in overdose. Doctors worry about medico-legal problems.

Good luck with paxil withdrawal. I think you might need to decrease in small increments. If you just went from 10mg to 7.5, that may be too much. Yes paxil withdrawals do take a long time for some people. Stuff seems worse than heroin to get off for some people. Others no problem.
